8 Tips for Decorating a Small Nursery

I’ve spent countless hours on Pinterest daydreaming about my baby’s nursery looking like the ones in the photos. But then reality struck and I remembered that my nursery budget was the size of a closet, and unfortunately, so was the room itself. When I was pregnant with our first child, my husband and I were living in a small apartment, with not very much space. But I wanted to make my baby’s room as enchanting as I could, regardless of the lack of space I had to work with. If your nursery is on the small side, here are some ideas to make your nursery beautiful as well as functional.

1. Utilize Wall Space for Storage
Make sure to use wall space by adding shelving. This allow you to store your baby stuff and make the room pretty. Place baskets on the shelves for  baby clothing or items for your nursing needs. You can also use them for books that you will read to your baby.

2. Replace the Door with a Curtain
If your nursery is a small space and doesn’t get much natural light, replace the door with a curtain so it can receive the light from any adjoining room. And without a door, you can place furniture near the doorway without worrying about a door hitting it.

3. Choose Furniture That Doubles As Storage
When choosing furniture for a small nursery, buy pieces that you can also use to store items. For example, if you’re buying a nightstand to place next to your rocker, make sure it has drawers in it.

4. Use Small Scale Furniture
Dressers an take up so much space, so try to purchase one that focuses on vertical space that is taller instead of one that is shorter and wider.

5. Use a Monochromatic Color Scheme
A good color scheme for a small nursery is something monochromatic, such as gray and white. Because everything is essentially the same color, or in the same color family, the eye isn’t distracted by contrasting items and moves around the room more easily. This helps your eyes and brain see the room as larger than it actually is.

6. Use A Dresser as a Changing Table
Traditional changing tables don’t have a lot of storage, and even when they do, it’s usually open storage that looks cluttered and messy. Instead, use a dresser as a changing table. It has a lot of storage for changing table needs and it’s all hidden in drawers.

7. Store Stuff Under the Crib
The crib is usually one of the biggest pieces of furniture in the nursery. There is so much room under the crib, you might as well utilize that space. You can make it look appealing by using decorative baskets and bins instead of plastic bins for storage.

8. Use A Door Shoe Organizer for Storage
Door shoe organizers are great for storing small items like baby blankets, burp cloths, onesies, shoes, and much more without taking up much space.
